AKAMAS Online Short Courses - Induction Foundation Programme

AKAMAS logo

Everyone who is part of the children’s workforce now needs to be able to access learning resources for induction and for continuing professional development (CPD).

This programme of short courses, provided by gold standard organisations in the sector, meets these needs for anyone who is working with children. They are robust enough to act as both induction courses for new staff and as CPD for established workers.

Fully mapped to a range of standards in social care and education, each course provides a notional ten hours of learning – equivalent to a one day course with associated reading and reflection on practice. Students can produce a Workbook to build a portfolio, and after passing a multi-choice quiz they receive a Certificate and a Development Log enabling them to record how they have applied the learning to their practice, which is signed by their supervisor.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The programme includes courses relevant to, among others:

  • Teachers and teaching assistants
  • Children’s Centre staff
  • Childminders and nursery staff
  • Foster carers and residential care workers
  • Social workers and CAMHS staff
  • Youth support workers and Connexions staff
  • Youth Offending Teams, police and probation

ONLINE STUDY

Students receive an access PIN and password. They can then log in to:

  • see which course they have been allocated
  • download and print their workbook
  • download supporting documents from their employer/agency
  • work through the course material, online activities and practical exercises
  • complete a multiple-choice assessment
  • compile a development log

ASSESSMENT AND STANDARDS

The courses include online assessment to ensure students have grasped key principles, and downloadable logs to show how learning has been integrated into workplace practice. They are mapped to relevant standards, including:

  • CWDC Common Induction Standards
  • CWDC Training Standards for Foster Care
  • Standards for Newly Qualified Teachers

BENEFITS

Courses are available as and when needed

Students can study at their own pace, wherever they have internet access

Organisations can easily track student progress and compliance with standards

AUTOMATED ASSESSMENT

At the end of each course, students are presented with an online multiple-choice assessment

Where answers are incorrect students are directed back to the learning material they need to review

Students have three attempts to complete the assessment and demonstrate they have achieved all the Learning Outcomes

When they pass the assessment they gain access to a Completion Certificate to download and print

LEARNING PORTFOLIO

If students and their employers/agencies make full use of the resources provided, they will be able to compile a portfolio to record their progress through the training. This consists of:

  • A Workbook for each course, where the student can make notes as they work through the exercises presented online
  • A Completion Certificate for each course, showing that the student has successfully passed the online assessment and demonstrated understanding of the key issues covered
  • A Development Log for each course, where the student and their supervisor/manager can identify how the learning has been put into practice and what further development needs have been identified
  • A Mapping Document showing how the course’s learning outcomes meet relevant training standards
