Level 5 Award in Leadership and Managment Skills

The Award is a concise qualification made up of two mandatory units. In the first unit, ‘Understanding the Management role’, participants explore the nature of the middle management role and critically evaluate their own managerial ability. In the second mandatory unit, ‘Assessing your own leadership capability and performance’, participants explore leadership styles within their organisation, the commitment and motivation of their teams and their own ability to motivate teams to meet organisational goals. There are no formal entry requirements but participants will normally be either practising or aspiring middle managers with the opportunity to meet the assessment demands and have a background that will enable them to benefit from the programme.

Learner Outcomes
The first unit, ‘Introduction to leadership’, explores different leadership styles and behaviours and their impact on individual and group behaviour. In the second unit candidates plan a practical leadership activity including identifying resources, assessing risks and briefing the team and allocating roles and responsibilities. In the final unit of the qualification candidates implement their learning through leading a team through the planned, practical activity.

Course Length
Minimum 30 hours - The course can either be run over 4 weekly sessions (3 hours per week 4.30- 7.30pm). Tutors are practiced managers with significant experience of management and leadership in the Children & Families sector. The Award is 10 credits, which equates to 30 guided learning hours and therefore it is expected learners will need to spend some time per week on top of the class-room time in order to complete the assessments and gain the qualification.
