Level 3 Award (Units 300, 304, 308)
This qualification provides essential knowledge and skills required to work effectively with parents and support parents in their parenting support role, in a wide range of settings. The qualification is for learners either in a paid or voluntary capacity, and comprises a practical course involving a portfolio of short essays, personal reflective reports, records and observations of practice. There is a requirement to run a parenting course to complete the portfolio and ideally this should be run concurrently with the training.
It is a eight day training course that explores the following topics:
- The National Occupational Standards for Work with Parents.
- Partnership working: strengths based and evidence based practice.
- Working with diverse families in an inclusive and non-judgemental way.
- Reflecting on how to identify family strengths, needs and concerns within a community context.
- Building on the knowledge needed and practical skills required in engaging effectively with families: contracting through creating clear boundaries and expectations; identifying strengths and needs; creating goal based action plans; coaching families to overcome obstacles and challenges; reviewing and celebrating change and progress and effective completion and closure.
- Effective signposting within a multi-agency environment.
- Key skills for facilitating group work, icebreakers, case studies, skills practice, quick think, energizers & discussion
- Group Theories that support effective and sensitive leadership of a developing group
- Understanding different Learning Styles and how to support them
- Understanding responsibilities & timescales, handling conflict & reviewing progress
- Evidence-based parenting courses versus developing bespoke materials
- A 40-minute micro-teach skills practice
The units covered by the Working with Families in the Community (inc. Parent Group Facilitator Training) Level 3 Award, accredited by City & Guilds are:
- Unit 300: Build and maintain relationship in work with parents (6 credits)
- Unit 304: Effective communication with parents (3 credits)
- Unit 308: Work with groups of parents (3 credits)
The credits obtained by completing the WWP Level 3 Award can go also be used to build towards a Level 3 Certificate in Work with Parents.
