The Family Matters Institute a market leader in providing the Work with Parents Qualifications accredited by City & Guilds at QCF Levels 3 & 4.
What are the qualifications about?
Get the skills you need to work effectively with parents, helping them to understand their role and meet their children's social, emotional, intellectual and physical needs in family life. Awards and Certificates in Work with Parents can help you start a career, develop your role and continue your professional development and are based on National Occupational Standard for Work with Parents endorsed by the Department for Education.
Who are they for?
An Award or Certificate in Work with Parents is for anybody supporting and working with parents and children either a formal or informal capacity with parents. They could be working in a variety of multi-agency professions or within the community. There are options to suit every level of experience - whether you're looking for a first job, developing your career or already working as a manager for a Parent Support or Family Intervention service.
The overall aims of the qualifications are to:
- Provide essential skills and knowledge for those who work with parents/families in a paid or voluntary capacity
- Raise awareness about the development needs of both parents and children
- Develop understanding about the relationships between parents and children
What does the Qualification cover?
The knowledge and understanding element covers the role of parents/carers, role of the practitioner, life-span development, the developing parent and the developing child/young person. The practical skills content covers working with parents, supporting parents and group work skills. In the study of all units, the learners will be expected to refer to the following issues:
- The variety of family structures that exist in our society, including the recognition that patterns may be different in particular contexts and in other parts of the world.
- The social, cultural and economic factors which affect the way in which parents carry out their roles.
- The effect of gender expectations on parenting, both fathering and mothering.
The impact of diversity in all its forms should be explored and the importance of respect for equal opportunities and anti bias practice is to be emphasised.
Issues of safeguarding children and work with vulnerable and families who find services ‘hard to reach’ will also be addressed throughout the course.
How does the Qualification work? The Work with Parents Award sit the new Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF). The QCF is the new way of recognising achievement - through the award of credit for units and qualifications - across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It provides more flexible routes to gaining full qualifications and enables progression to be achieved in smaller steps through the accumulation of credit. Each qualification is assigned a unique title which will indicate:
- the level (difficulty) e.g. Level 3 or 4
- size (Award, Certificate or Diploma) - built up of individual Units each with a Credit value e.g. 6 credits that combine to make the Award, Certificate or Diploma
- subject content
- and sometimes terminology to indicate the qualification purpose (eg. NVQ).
