Want to Run a Parenting Course?

Are you wanting to run a parenting course in your area? Don't know where to start? Don't know which course to use? We can give you answers and resources.

There is now a lot of emphasis on qualification and quality standards in parent education so it is vital that parenting facilitators gain accreditation.

To gain OCN accreditation (6 credits at level 3) a student must attend two training days, observe an experienced parenting facilitator, and complete a portfolio of evidence compiled whilst facilitating a parenting group.

Day one

Day 1 of training features the basic skills of group facilitation:

  • How to introduce an Icebreaker game
  • How to get the most out of a case study
  • How to introduce role play to minimise embarrassment and maximise learning!
  • How to develop the creative thinking produced as a result of 'brainstorming'
  • How to lead a small group effectively and sensitively
  • How to use media (film, TV, art and music) to open up discussions relating to parenting.
  • Raise awareness of the need to offer a range of activities in order to accommodate different learning styles

During the morning of the first day of training we 'race' through all of the above providing examples of good practice. After lunch during a micro teaching session each trainee has the opportunity to practice one of these skills. The tutor observes and then together with the group offers positive and helpful feedback, highlighting where the trainee did well and offering alternative approaches for future consideration and personal development.

Day two

Day 2 of training concentrates on analysing:

  • The learning acquired during the running of a series of parenting sessions - flexibility and willingness to change and adapt material to meet the needs of a particular group of parents.
  • The learning gained as a result of observing an experienced parenting facilitator.
  • The need for evaluation.
  • Ways to ensure that a parenting group is achieving the desired objectives.

'Want to Run a Parenting Course? - Facilitator Skills' supports any parenting programme. We aim to offer the training needed to enable parenting facilitators to run any parenting programme with confidence and professionalism. Indeed experience shows that often it is necessary to adapt existing material or devise new resources to meet the specific needs of parents.
